Re: New Build 2012 Ram 3500 4x4 Diesel Expo/Chase/Tow/Truck
Hey finally got into this truck... I have put 20K hard miles on this rig, and it is holding up VERY well... Unplugged the EGR as soon as I drove off the lot.. It has been an amazing truck... After loading it down with gear it weighs in at 10,700 pounds with a full tank of diesel.. The truck has STUPID POWER and averages 18mpg highway and 13.8 around town. It has the new Urea system and burns about 5 gallons every 1300 miles. I am going to wait until it hits the 100K when it drops out of warranty until I do the deletes...
I put the 15K warn winch on the front of it using the new Westin winch mount system (works with the factory bumper) looks really nice...
Just ordered the new Pro Comp Stage (3) 6" long arm suspension lift from 4wheel parts and brand new 37" load range E pro Comp extreme all terrain tires. with 18" black bead lock Moto wheels
All of this will be installed on Oct 6th and 7th. I will post pics as soon as it is all done and complete.
Also ordered the new Polomino Back Pack series ss-1251 soft side slide in camper for the rear of the rig, and will be decking this truck out to be the "tow rig" for the exo-caged dodge that I have, and to also use this truck to hit the Baja penninsula again this coming summer for a 2 month surf trip. I will post pictures as soon as the kit gets installed and the tires are on.. I should be picking up the new camper by October 16th.

Re: New Build 2012 Ram 3500 4x4 Diesel Expo/Chase/Tow/Truck
OK Sorry for the delay... After much research and consideration for the use of this truck. I decided to not go as big as I intended. Being that this truck will be used to tow my buggy around in a 38' enclosed trailer, and to carry a truck camper to hit Baja Mexico for surf trips to Scorpion bay.. this is the outcome.
Engine performance (so Far) Full EGR delete by Sinister diesel,,, Throttle valve delete from Sinister, AEM Momentum cold Air intake,, turbo wheel upgrade (turbo dynamics) ,, PCV line delete (me) ,,, Full DPF and Urea system delete (since this truck will burn non ULSD diesel in Mexico (and the fact that Florida does not have emissions:):):):):) 5" turbo back stainless steel exhaust (free flow:)
TUned By: H&S mini-max tuner (set at performance) STUPID FAST AND POWERFUL TRUCK For the record, I went from 14mpg average to over 20mpg average street/highway
Suspension: 3" Carli Suspension with Bilstein 5160 piggy shocks. Custom rear 3" lift (cab and chassis are WAY different that a regular 3500 series truck)
12k winch with a simple Westin winch plate on the front.
Tires 35" Pro Comp Load Range E tires. WHeels are 18" whatevers:)
The upper tool boxes are going to be removed to make room for the Camper (palomino SS1251 camper)
The rear 11.5 axle came with the Factory locker (not the limited slip) and came with the "special order" Aisin transmission

Re: New Build 2012 Ram 3500 4x4 Diesel Expo/Chase/Tow/Truck
I love all the deletes on this...FUCK'N SWEET! Shit MPG...DELET! Shit performance...DELET! Shit reliability...DELETE! DELET!DELET!DELET!DELET! Well played Sir!
Re: New Build 2012 Ram 3500 4x4 Diesel Expo/Chase/Tow/Truck
Thanks man. The Deletes were a fortune to perform (a total of $2100) but SO WORTH IT.. With all the emissions stuff,, Truck was underpowered and struggled to breath over 2500 rpm's, the DPF is a great design, but SERIOUSLY hindered this truck, add to the fact that I tow heavy and it DRANK urea like crazy WITH shitty fuel economy I averaged 8mpg towing and 14 around town and highway... After the deletes,,,this thing turned into a MONSTER!!!! Simply running the "street" tune Fuel economy improved like CRAZY.. Now when I tow the 38' enclosed trailer I average 13mpg and not towing anything I average about 20/21mpg in the highway, and it pulls like a monster on steroids!!!! From 2000rpm to 3400rpm it feels like your on a nitrous hit... Cruising at 60mph I average 24mpg (but who drives 60mpg LOLOL) Best thing I ever did to this truck.. I voided the warranty on the truck do it,,,,but who fucking cares,,,, its a Cummins and an Aisin Transmission... Cant get any better than that combo for reliability.
Just for the record, I run a VERY clean tune through this truck (I dont like to "roll coal" as it gives a bad name for ALL diesel trucks everywhere) But I really enjoy having a "true" diesel truck without all the EPA BULLSHIT!!!!!! Keep the tunes clean, and don't blow smoke, and ALL the Prius drivers will be happy..

Completely agreed!! That's awesome!! Just shows why mileage has gotten worse in the diesels the last decade and a half!! And that they're still capable of excellent mileage! Wicked set up!

Is the Palomino camper going to mount on top of lower side boxes ? Slide in between them ? If so, how will you access all the stuff on the side of camper that is showing ? (outside shower/vent the refrig/hot water heater/furnace/water fill/shore power ?
Or is it going to be a flatbed ? Or going back to a reg stock bed ?
Just curious.

Re: New Build 2012 Ram 3500 4x4 Diesel Expo/Chase/Tow/Truck
Thanks for the thumbs up.. THe camper will slide right into the back of the service body, but, I am going to need to modify the back of the service body to except the "kick out" at the rear of the camper for the bathroom. All I have to do is plasma cut a section 6" wider and 32" longer at the rear of the service body (which will be REALLY easy to cut and weld that section on the service body) The unit will slide right into the service body, just like a pick up truck,, (after the slight modification).. The back of the palomino camper, (the side flap at the lower/rear of the camper is removable) and will allow access to ALL of the cabinets from the outside of the truck. When I am done with the conversion, it will look like the camper was "meant" to be in there, and was "part" of the service body. The camper is exactly 9' long (my bed is also 9' long) From my measurements, the access window at the front of the camper will work PERFECTLY with my back window in the truck, so you can get into the camper from inside from truck going through the rear window. I am also going to make a custom water tank into the service body to have an extra 70 gallons of water carrying capacity with its own "on-demand" pump (just like my dodge when it had the expedition gear) The top of the truck (over the crew cab) will have a surfboard rack and the new "bent" LED light bar on the front, with plenty of roof to put the surfboards on top of the cab (under the camper that sticks out over the cab. I am also going to deck out the entire top of the camper with (4) 200 watt Solar panels to keep the batteries charged. These solar panels will also be "wired" into the truck to be able to charge the diesel batteries also.. The camper also comes with the AC unit on the top, and I am also getting the electric awnings on BOTH sides of the camper AND the rear. Also am installing LED light bars on ALL 4 corners of the camper to be able to light it up at night.
I am running a Honda EU2000I generator to power the AC unit,(the AC unit is a 9000btu unit and will work perfectly with the quiet generator and other things.. THe generator will be installed into the drivers side rear cabinet, with its own vents and a custom exhaust system to be able to run the generator while the cabinet is closed and locked. I am also going to install a 7 gallon fuel tank into the same cabinet (above the generator) and tied into the generator with the Honda fuel kit, to be able to have extended run times for the generator.
There are MANY other really neat things I am going to do with this truck, as a tow truck, and an expedition truck for the Baja. Stay tuned.... Its geting ready to happen soon:)
I have not purchased the camper yet, as I am torn between the palomino HS6601 and the SS1251. Both are designed the same way with the same measurements but one has hard sides, and the other is the soft side. I like the fact that the HS6601 has the removable black water cartridge to be able to get rid of waste without having to find a dump station. I think I am going to go with the Hard side unit. Decided to go with the Palomino HS6601 So I had to notch the rear of the service body to make room for the bathroom on the new slide in camper.
then move the brake lights over to make room. here is the result.

I know how hard that thin steel is to weld without warping it. I wish I could do this kind of work in my driveway

Awesome truck !!!
If we can delete all that shit on the engine/emissions, jump from 14 to 20 mpg, then make it run on veg oil for zero emissions, then is the problem with the EPA ? They should be doing back flips & want everyone with diesels to do this. In fact, they should help off-set the cost of it, like they do for solar power.

Re: New Build 2012 Ram 3500 4x4 Diesel Expo/Chase/Tow/Truck
You are dead on!!!!!! It is a BITCH to weld thin steel, you have to know what you are doing!!!!! A mixture of fast spot welding and hitting lower settings on the welder with slower line speeds, and keeping the arc VERY close to the copper tip of the Mig (went through a few tips) AND pre-spot welds every 3" to counter the warping. As soon as I cut the section off with the plasma, I was like "damn,,,,this is some thin metal to play with" I am used to welding 1/4" thick plate and .125 wall tube,,,,,this was a reminder to polish up on my thin metal welding.BigRed2007 wrote:I know how hard that thin steel is to weld without warping it. Looking good! I work with some professional welders that would have left that looking like waves in the sea! Nice work.
