Horsepower!!!

Post by 06wagon » Thu Oct 17, 2013 1:38 am

Well the time has come to build a pulling motor for the wagon. As some of you know, I use my truck for truck pulls instead of the off pavement ventures that most use this truck for.

The original 5.7 is coming out and put in storage, and a 6.1 based 426 stroker in going in its place!!! Over 600 hp at the flywheel! Motor will still run on pump gas. Hopefully it'll last me about 2 years and will get pulled again to go to a stroked 440!

Pulling season is going to be fun next year!!

Getting all the details worked out now..... Truck is getting the 6.1. Going to run stock stroke in it for now. Slightly larger bore. I'm spending the money on parts now that I can reuse when I go bigger.

Luke from what used to be Michigan HEMI Performance is doing the swap/work on it.

I plan on dropping the truck off around the end of the year. Truck hasn't moved in over 5 weeks, so not having it over the winter is not an issue. I think it's safe to say that we are looming forward to getting it done and hitting the track!!!

Sounds like a good start. I've followed a few of Luke's builds in the past and he knows how to make horsepower.
2007 Dodge Power Wagon - Inferno Red Quad Cab, G56, KRC 210X cam, SRT8 JGC seats, 35x12.50 Toyo MT's, Offroad lights behind the grill, Warn wireless winch remote, Carli front Diff Guard, Carli Long Travel Air Bags, On board air complete w/ train horns, homemade hidden gooseneck hitch, Homemade locker bypass, upgraded Mopar steering box, Centerforce clutch
1998 Dodge 2500 Laramie, QCSB 4x4. 24V cummins, completely rebuilt chassis with '01 1500 body installed, full gauges, Edge drag comp box, +150hp injectors, performance 47re built by me, 35" Toyo MTs on 3rd gen wheels.
2002 Dodge Ram 1500 ST 4x4 Quad Cab 4.7L Bright Silver, HO Cams, 12,000 lbs Winch mounted behind bumper, 4.56's, 2500 factory tow hooks, 35x12.50 Toyo MT's, Air-Lift Ride Control bags, homemade hidden ball gooseneck hitch.
1987 W100 - carburated 5.7 Hemi/727 combo, 35" Toyo MT's. Ramcharger D44 w/ warn hubs, Warlock seats, 2nd gen center console
1987 Dakota - RCSB, 413 big block, LT headers.
And a few jeeps for good measure.

Now all I have to get is a set of long tube headers (which is becoming a challenge), cut outs, oil pan, pick up, cold air intake, and a new clutch down the road. (The centerforce clutch barely held on the stock motor)

Yes, all skid plates are removed. Winch and mount removed. Rear bumper, rear seats, center front seat, factory hitch replaced with custom made one, traction bars, anything else to ditch weight.

Front sway bar is coming off, driveshaft hoops and ujoint shields are going on. Emergency kill switch is added to the back.

Biggest hurdle I've had so far, is finding a clutch. So it turns out no one makes a clutch for our G56 trucks to handle this high of horsepower that I'm shooting for. So Valair, out of Texas is going to make a "one of a kind" billet flywheel and dual disk clutch. My centerforce clutch will go to Dan once I get the truck back from the engine builder.

I'm keeping my eye out for a 11.5 or a new 11.8 rear axle to replace the 10.5. I'm trying to build the driveline for the next engine build in the future....... A 440 HEMI, or something based off the new 6.4!! :cash:

Custom ported and polished intake showed up today! Makes 40-50 more horsepower at the wheels compared to a ported 5.7 or a factory 6.1 intake

6.1l intake ported and polished by GTP Headmasters. 85mm intake.

The polishing is insane on the inside. I'd hate to know how many hours it took to do....

This is one hell of a build!

Question- what are you doing with the winch, skid plates, etc that you took off the truck? Will those go back on some day, or is the truck now going to be dedicated to sled pulls?

Winch is going to get mounted on my gooseneck trailer. The mount got sold and shipped to a member in Florida. Skid plates will most likely never go back on.

Basically, truck is going to become just a puller.

Rear axle will come out for a 11.5 once it grenades. Plan on taking this motor to around 440 cu in. Once it gets to that point I'll start building a tube chassis and a blown 650+ cu in motor for super modified 4wd. Something closer to 3000 horsepower!!

You can sell that big ol' PW winch for around a grand, and replace it with a cheap 8K unit - that's all you'd need on a trailer. Heck, that should net you an extra 600 bucks in mod money.
I'm just along for the ride...

It's been awhile since I've updated this thread. But just a few details of what's going in. I had to cut back a few things that I wanted to do. But should still make well over 600hp.

6.1 OEM block

4.065 Bore

Mopar Crank balanced by John Kaminski in Taylor, MI

Manley H-Beam Rods 6.240" - ARP2000 fasteners

Manley pistons domed +4cc, about 11:1 compression

GFX Steel Rings, gapped .030

Thitek Heads
2.165 intake valves
1.65 exhaust valves
PSI1500 Beehive springs
