Stuck in Fernley-The rest of the Story

Post by fbenross » Tue Oct 09, 2012 10:04 pm

My PW buds get it first...I might do an artical for Truck Camper Magazine Later-The Picts will be in order of trip. PS pump at Wally World Parking Lot..Lic plate rack on road to high rock canyon. High Rock Canyon-the settlers used this canyon as one of the routes to CA. and OR. Paint took another hit on this trail..I don't even flinch any more when I hear scrapes going down the side. Next day Tues. exit of high rock canyon is Smiths Camp-A brick cabin on blm land free for use sleeps 6 water fire pit... nice. Picts of tues camp spot and picts of Wens. petroglyphs (indian grafittie) for you guys that didn,t make it out of middle school....Wens. night camped at Catnip Res in Sheldon Nat. wildlife refuge. I will be going back here -what a great place..I saw more prong horns, deer, wild horses and burrows, raptors (the birds not the truck) and coyotes......on this trip than I have in all my other trips to NV. On thurs went to IXL ranch it is abandoned and owned by the refuge now..cool place. Thurs night camped at Virgin Valley Camp. It has a warm spring to swim in (did I say this is all free camping) I took the cycle cuz It is so slow to explore the back country roads in the PW The picts of the IXL Ranch for example - it was several off the graded road-and ruff in spots-nothing the PW couldn't handle but so much faster on a cycle. At virgin Valley I took the cycle out to a place where I atempted to hike to an old indian cave..I didn't find it. Got all scratched up by sticker bushes and wet to the knees crossing mucky water. No Rattlers seen :jawdrop: I gave up and on the way back ran into a big horn sheep hunter. He was on a quad and was a nice guy. He won a lottery tag for one sheep and said it took him 20 yrs to get the tag he ask me if I had seen any and told me there were only 150 in the refuge, and he was one of only 5 guys that had a tag for a sheep and One guy had got his so far. Virgin Valley has camping with a warm spring for swimming and free pedicures see pict. There is a fire opal mine where you can pay to mine and/or pay to camp with hookups..I loved the VV free camp with the warm spring (83 degrees) with fishies. Fri morn I headedf for home-did some rock hounding on the way..I had trouble finding places to get rid of my garbage-i had 3 bags ..I found an abandoned deep mine shaft going straight down and made a deposit....no picts
