Big Bear Run, Novemner 2016.

Post by Allen8511 » Sun Oct 09, 2016 9:49 pm

November 19th *** Tentative date***

So here is what I'm suggesting. The day I'm suggesting should be worry free and a lot of fun.

9:00 am meet at the North Shore Cafe. Be ready to go with at least 3/4 tank of gas.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/North ... 16.9457891

9:30 - 10:30, Trail #1: Jacoby Trail. A moderate trail that can be narrow in some places. A small technical portion, but our Power Wagons should make short work of it. Other than a few light brush marks, I do not expect any damage on this trail.

10:30 - 12:00, Cactus Flats OHV Park. A good time to have a bag lunch or a snack, take some group pictures, and encourage random shenanigans (speed runs, donuts, etc).

12:00 - 2:00, Trail #2: Butler's Peak. An easy trail with great views that will take us to to over 8,000 ft. It can be steep and narrow in places. At the top is a US Nat. Forest lookout tower (fun for kids).

Special notes:
1. It might be a good idea to get a Forest Adventure Day pass if you intend on recreating away from your vehicle.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Going list.

I put this on the calendar, but I have a lot of outings in November, not sure I can get away with another one. Just ran Jacoby uphill 2 weeks ago, you can do it in 2wd it is no big deal. If you want assistance getting some trails that are a little closer together, or a little more challenging, let me know, I volunteer with the Forest Service OHV program and know the mountain pretty well.

On a side note, if I do make it, I will be camping (remote, no campground) if anyone wants to join me.

I may be game for this one. We might be riding our bikes in Gorman that weekend, but if that happens the weekend before I will be there. We used to go to north shore cafe every once in a while when I was a firefighter up there. It will be a different perspective for me, I haven't done any of those trails recreationally, only for rescues.

Holcomb Valley Road and 2N02 regions would be neat areas to check out as well. It sounds like you guys know what you're up to though.

BlkWgn, off site camping is tempting.

DamageWagon, I'm down for whatever seems fun and safe. If you come out on this trip we can talk about hitting Holcomb Valley Trail.

Allen, I'm down for the same things. I just like to have fun, which mainly to me means going to new places. I only know what I know of the area. I will say that our 2wd posi-trac patrol truck did more off-road in that area than I ever beg of of my PW! I'm not looking to sponsor trail damage.com

BlkWgn, I'm onboard. That is the only way I camp now if I have a say. Last year we camped at Serrano campground by the lake and they wouldn't even allow contained propane fires. No fires is like no camping. Lame.

I'm coming from Upland myself. I would probably head up Friday night and camp somewhere easy, but it might make sense to just head up in the morning to be at Northshore Cafe at 9. Did you want to head up together?

I wouldn't mind going up in a convoy in the morning, it would probably be fun. Maybe meet at like a starbucks or something.

It would be great to meet you, I'm in EMS also, became a medic in 2008. Care is a great company, nice work.

I'd bet we are the only EMS guys with Power Wagons in LA. Great minds think alike ;)
Its a small world. I told our probationary guys that there are only 12 firefighters in the world, they all know each other, and they will all know your name before you meet them.

My EMT instructor was from Care originally, I agree it has a good reputation. We might need a Power Wagon EMS sticker soon... Maybe a Rescue one would be more fitting

 maybe get a rescue wagon sticker haha. But I think it would be cool for us EMS guys to meet up, share some stories, do a little trail stuff.

thedriver21,
I'm still planning for the 19th. I'm also thinking of doing a short route recon sometime before the 19th just to make sure the trails are how I remembered them.

As far as shooting areas go, I only know of Arrastre Creek and one or two mini ranges. They're just a hill with a sign lol. No really good shooting areas that I officially know of. I've heard good things about Arrastre Creek but I've never found the actual shooting area, I don't think it's right at the creek. We would be close to it though. I don't think I've ever seen a Ranger up there in 9 years outside of the big obvious forestry spots. We could do some exploring...

Separately, we are having a friendsgiving that weekend in Ocotillo Wells I would really like to make. I may head up to Big Bear Friday night and dispersed camp and then head out for Ocotillo mid- or early- Saturday when we finish a trail.

There are 2 on arrastre creek, both are short ranges, but not bad. It is one of my normal spots. As of this point all shooting spots on the mountain are still closed for fire danger and most likely will not be open before the trip but I can point out the spots if we go by

I am assuming it would not be an issue, but I have a buddy with a 2500 cummins that wants to tag along
