Moab is awesome, but if you're not into wheeling it can feel like hell on a lot of the trails. Things like White Rim she may love though.

I wouldn't say it's hell. But if her personality is the kind where she freaks out at being next to a ledge in the truck, then yea. That would fell like hell to her. If she's the kind of gal that can hang out and enjoy the ride, and doesn't mind jumping out of the truck to take pictures and shit, then she'll have a good time. But you're the only one who knows her personality type.

Re: MOAB 2017 - May 1-7
There's lots of jumping out and spotting, especially on long rigs like ours. Passengers have a crappy job (if they're not into it). I loved spotting for my friend getting to the Dollhouse, but I like the technical stuff. There are pretty tame trails that are very scenic that she could have a ton of fun on too! Moab has something for everyone. The Moab region has tons of stuff far beyond that of canyonlands. If she comes, she can have all the fun she wants, really.

Well... to be honest, I am the one who will freak out about being next to a ledge... I am TERRIFIED of heights!!!!MikeKey wrote:I wouldn't say it's hell. (Remember, I live in the southeast so, even if there is a cliff, there's about a billion trees to help catch you before you go far, LOL!)
But, I think the camaraderie, scenery, and awe of the overall experience will overcome that for me!
My wife actually used to be into wheeling (was even starting to drive a little) until a friend convinced us to rent fourwheelers and I flipped mine on a hill climb at Uwharrie. It flipped over onto me and drug me under it for about five feet before it flipped off me and went end over end down the hill. She was about five feet to the side of me when it happened. I got EXTREMELY lucky and only shattered my wrist (like into tiny bits, I have a T-shaped plate and 10-11 screws in my wrist, didn't get back enough usage of it to be able to work for over 6 months) but, she has been freaked out about off road ever since and that was nearly a decade ago. So, most likely a solo trip for me unless one of my buddies comes along.

Re: MOAB 2017 - May 1-7
Quads have a Return to Sender mode. I tell my girlfriend this every time we ride. Her quad has rolled over and landed on her twice now and she still won't get on a damn bike! 4x4's are a different boat, and there are definitely trails in Moab that have a pucker factor of 10, but you get to pick exactly where you're going. Go online and find her some pictures of White Rim trail and Fins n' Things and tell her that's the scenery and Fins is the scariest one you will do (not scary, and the pictures look fun).
On the flip side, my friend picked a trail he really wanted to do and we went for it with no recent trail info. Something like 30-40 miles and a river crossing into this trail we find the shelf road is completely washed out... So yeah, Moab is whatever you make it to be.

Return to Sender mode, LOL! Yeah, they sure do!
Yup, that's along the lines of what I told her, some of the most beautiful scenery in the world out there!!!!
Definitely updated info is key!

Re: MOAB 2017 - May 1-7
I'm confirmed, probably camping at Ken's Lake.
A comms suggestions, if I may. While I highly recommend everyone go get their amateur tech license, I realize it's not realistic to expect everyone to go out and get licensed right away. I'd suggest choosing two of the seven combined FRS/GMRS channels, a primary and secondary in case we run into interference. Using combined channels will allow anyone to use FRS walkies that they likely already own, or can pickup for $30 at Walmart on the way (or RadioShack in town probably). It will also allow anyone who has or is willing to acquire a GMRS license to use an external antenna and 5W transmit power so they can reach farther and relay to the walkies as necessary. The Midland MXT-105 is a great little mobile radio for those who'd like to go GMRS, it's $100, and the license is $65 (no test, valid for 5 years, issued within 24 hours). CB sucks, and handheld CB is worse, FRS walkies will outperform them and are far more convenient.
If there are other hams in the group, we should coordinate callsigns and repeater use so we can communicate across town. From what I understand the Sinbad Linked Repeater System covers downtown Moab and a good deal of the surrounding area including much of Canyonlands.

Re: MOAB 2017 - May 1-7
aearles, great idea. Doesn't one of the amateur bands have GMRS crossover? I forget if that's a 70cm or 2m. I just got my Yaesu ham yesterday. I also love those cheap little Baofeng ht's.

Re: MOAB 2017 - May 1-7
Sort of, the FRS/GMRS band is ~462MHz, which is basically the 70cm band. With a baofeng or modified 70cm radio you can program these frequencies and communicate with the group. This is technically not legal because amateur equipment is not type-accepted for use on Part 95 services, but plenty of people do it .

Re: MOAB 2017 - May 1-7
I have good news and bad news:
Good news: as of now, I am going, I am going to start plotting routes and booking hotels next weekend!!!!
Bad news: I will only be in Moab May 2-4. I need to go and deal with some family stuff in Reno, NV resulting from my Grandpa passing away. (no, his passing was not recent, it was 14 years ago but, a family friend has been storing stuff I inherited from him since then so, if I am driving out west anyway, I have no excuse- I need to go out there and sort through it)
So, 7 days on the road, about 77 hours total driving time, three days of wheeling, LOL!
Regarding the comms discussion, all I have at my disposal is:
cell phone, CB, or Rugged Radio
If there is a consensus to go some other route comms wise, I am not opposed to purchasing something as long as pricing is not too CRAZY!
