Anyone Flat Towing a 2016 PW?

Post by Chaszur » Sat Oct 29, 2016 12:32 am

I am looking to flat tow my 2016 behind my RV. Blue Ox makes a baseplate for 2012 - 2014 Power Wagons. Road master makes one that, although not specifically listed for the 2016, I am told it should fit but the it looks like the air dam needs to removed for it to work.

Is anyone flat towing? What are you using and can you provide some feedback and pics?

Thanks!

If you had a offroad bumper that had a place for shackles. Blue Ox makes an adapter for it.

I have an off-road bumper on my Jeep Wrangler but had not thought about swapping out the PW's bumper. Anybody have any favorite after market bumper they recommend?

I have the Aluminess bumper. But I don't know if it can handle flat towing.

This is turning out to be more of a challenge than I expected. I checked Aluminess, AEV and Smittybilt all of whom sell an off-road bumper for the PW. They all say the same thing. The bumper is not designed for flat tow applications and will not work. I'm no engineer but it seems that if the bumper has tabs for recovery use, those tabs should be strong enough to use for flat towing bu the manufacturers disagree. I've contacted a couple local truck customizers and they are willing to quote on custom bumpers.

I'm really surprised nobody else, according to distributors, is flat towing a Power Wagon. I guess I'll see where this all goes after talking to local fabricators.

As far as an attachment point for a tow bar, I'm thinking you could replace the OEM tow hooks with something fabricated like this, but turned horizontally. And you'd still have a good attachment place for a clevis shackle...

If that wasn't you, then who had that set-up?

Out of curiosity, I did some checking ...

http://blueox.com/products/baseplates/b ... wer-wagon/

Is there any difference between the front end of a 2014 vs a 2016 ? I don't know for sure , but they look the same to me. If there is no difference, I don't see any reason why this baseplate won't work. Sometimes aftermarket manufacturers are slow to update their product info.

This is pretty cool ...

EXACTLY. A winch with a snatch block, hooked back to the bumper would put far more stress on the bumper tow hook area than flat towing ever would. Hell, even yanking someone out of the mud would do the same.

Where can I get these? I'm going to make my own bumper so that I can flat tow the PW.

Either of those will do the job. Not too much side to side strength required for flat towing.
