Re: lost a trailer
I know a lot of people using that hitch setup and everyone is very happy with them. Do you have a build thread for the trailer anywhere?

Re: lost a trailer
no build thread, I've just started building it but going very slow. I's an old flat bed 6 1/2 X 12 foot I'm going to make into a vardo type gypsy wagon. It will be wooden framed with screwed and glued skin, I hope it will stand up to at least forest service type roads.

This sounds kind of cool. I am going to suggest, no demand that you go over to americanadventurist.com and start a build thread for the trailerverdesardog wrote:no build thread, I've just started building it but going very slow. Re: lost a trailer
All I have done so far is put the axle on top of the springs and added electric brakes.....and the hitch.
Thanks for the website, I've not heard of that one before.

It is a new site, only a few months old, but growing quickly. Add a few pics with your last post from here and you have the start to your build thread. It is a lot of the "Rendezvous" group from expo portal if you are familiar with that

That's an interesting hitch design. What keeps the nut from backing off when turning?

there is a sleeve that the tounge bolt goes through, the nut (a nylock) is touqued down on the sleeve. It's the sleeve that rotates with trailer sway.....

Re: lost a trailer
Kinda seems like the trailer cannot move side to side without the truck to me. Missing a articulation point that a ball does have. The lock and roll has it though.verdesardog wrote:?? me either and I'm not going to now. Just got this new hitch for the camping trailer I'm building. Rated at 6,000lbs. Total articulation, no ball.

Re: lost a trailer
the hitch has much more movement in all three degrees of freedom...roll, pitch and yaw than a ball hitch does.

Re: lost a trailer
I see the extra joint in the video you posted but not in the one you pictured unless it is a new design and swivels right in front of the grease fitting?

Re: lost a trailer
it is a new design, see the thin line between the zerk and the pin and bushing? That is a bit of grease coming out of the joint. That's where it is free to rotate in the roll axis....that's what the zerk is for, to lube the inner workings there.

Re: lost a trailer
Ok thats waht i figured the more I looked at it! I looks awsome. Im interested in what mods you have to do to the trailer to use this set up. Please post pics. Thats gotta be one of the coolest set ups I have yet to see. I did lose a trailer this spring! Went and did some trail riding in the Razor got back and 2 blocks from the house I see the trailer tounge hanging down in my mirror! To my discovery the reciver pin is gone. Pulled the Hitch right out of the reciver! I think someone where I was riding removed it while i was out riding.

Re: lost a trailer
The only mod to use this was to weld a reciever tube on top of the old hitch....you can see part of the old ball hitch under the tube in the bottom photo....

BlkWgn & dog, I like the ones that you guys showed, very simple, and in my mind, simple is always better.

I was going to put on a swivel hitch, flop the axle and put on 14" wheels and tires on the Coleman tent trailer, but I just seem to use my camper all the time now. Might be a good project for this winter.

Re: lost a trailer
Many years ago I was looking at the colmean small pop up with the kitchen outside at the back of the trailer, don't remember the model. For just myself that would be fine but with my significant other along she would prefer something that didn't need to be set up and taken down all the time.
If the axle on your trailer has a camber you have to remove the axle and remount it on top of the springs, not just flip it. That light trailer is probably fine without brakes, mine will probably be in the 3,000lb range so I put brakes on it.

Re: lost a trailer
I like the camper on your truck, but my truck has to be more portable. Maybe something like that on a contractors bed trailer would be cool.

Re: lost a trailer
Most of my travels are to a new destination every night, so my camper works best for me. No speed limitations compared to those when towing a trailer, and I can camp wherever I end up every night. Between the camper, Coleman tent trailer and my brother's 26' hard side trailer, I've pretty much covered all my camping needs.verdesardog wrote:I like the camper on your truck, but my truck has to be more portable. I've seen some pretty cool sheepherder trailers and I'm looking forward to see with what you come up with dog.

Both CA law and common sense require brakes on trailers weighing 2,000lbs. or more.

Re: lost a trailer
These hitches are a very interesting design. I just wonder is there much of an advantage to these over a pintle hitch? Wasn't a pintle hitch originally designed for military off road use? Less moving parts and rated for higher loads. I think the one advantage I see to these hitches is they may be less noisy than an pintle.
