Re: Power Wagons in Moab 2020 - May 4th - May 8th - Registration Open

GMRS only requires a license for high power (>2W) and repeaters. Otherwise it can be run license-free simplex and <=2W. Edited to add: on the "Gear" page, BTECH UV-5X3 is listed. That is not, and cannot be, a legal GMRS radio. It's a ham radio, not type-certified for FRS or GMRS use. Will it work, y...

you'll have better luck finding me if you go north where there's snow. First avy class of the season this weekend. Intro class friday night with on-snow saturday, then a rescue course sunday. I'll likely spend an hour or two of new years in the backyard playing with beacons so I don't embarras...

There's likely some rain (snow) fading on that path, might pick up a few db in clear skies and with that a little less latency as data rate/qam constellation changes. "Communications Technician" is what I generally call myself. Similar to "Test Engineer" at my real job, it's more jack-of-all-trades ...

So the problematic shot just wasn't doable. I think the simulation software had bad DEM data. Couple trips by other techs in the past few months, including one to get an LTE gateway installed. Running 3 sites over LTE VPN is less than ideal. So coordination happened, equipment happened, and space on...

Vehicles don't go in wilderness (legally).
"Backcountry" is the word you're looking for. Big difference in land use issues.

And I think a helicopter would be the ultimate recovery rig.

CO4x4RNR is the big one out here that I know of. Should do one of their courses someday.

I've got a small drip in a clearance light.

What do you use to 'rough-in' the alignment of the dish to the remote site? Radios have a couple of signal strength LEDs on them. Sweep one direction, till you see where the signal drops, then picks up again, then drops again. That's one of the side lobes. Sweep the other direction, same deal. Find...

Roof will give you better performance than hood/bed/etc mounts. Better ground plane, better take-off angles, etc etc etc. NMO/Hole-in-the-roof .... I was hesitant at first too, but after drilling 3 holes in the roof of my pickup I can honestly say it's easier than I expected and works way better tha...

Re: 12vdc to 5vdc output hub

Some USB devices need to negotiate with the host/charger for power delivery, so just putting 5V on the lines doesn't work with those devices. Very device-dependent. Samsung phones are really picky about what they'll take power from. My Motorola stuff doesn't care - if there's power there, it'll take...

Get the hitch and trailer's jack far enough from the receiver that the trailer clears the tailgate. Not that big of a deal.

Re: Does the Sway Bar Disconnect ever work?

Mine works great. Shift into 4 (high or low), press the button, light blinks... if it doesn't disengage in a second or two, a wiggle of the steering wheel to unbind things is all it takes.
Lockers are the problematic feature.

I've got a little RV extinguisher between door and drivers seat. Just enough room there, out of the way, and easy access if needed.
