Re: MOAB 2017 - May 1-7

New to the registry but I signed up for the meet a couple weeks ago and haven't heard anything or received any emails. Am I missing anything? Just making sure you have my info. :winchmob: Just want to confirm, are you Nick? If so I'll update your forum name on the contact sheet. Emails going out so...

Re: MOAB 2017 - May 1-7

@Pit Slave, I am in town but I work until 3:00pm. Wife and I are talking about going exploring this afternoon, maybe Tusher Tunnel or Gemini Bridges but no firm plans and I think it's supposed to rain. What time will you be around and where are you thinking? Feel free to text me @ (586) 596-5192.

Re: HAM Radios

No argument here, I just meant that it's not intended to be a "combo radio".

I also don't see anything wrong with using a Baofeng or other ham radio on FRS/GMRS, like you said, as long as it's done responsibly.

Re: MOAB 2017 - May 1-7

Dalton Well Rd. is open, there appeared to be a lot of overflow from Willow Springs moving there so I didn't bother driving it. I'll check again as we get closer to May.

Re: HAM Radios

I didn't even know you could get a combo radio like that... You really can't. The 857d is an all-band/all-mode ham radio that supports the 10m amateur band. It can be modified to transmit outside of the amateur bands, including 11m/CB frequencies. It is not type accepted and doesn't meet the techni...

Looks familiar @DamageWagon! I ran it backwards with a group from Expedition Portal on New Years. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Oj8CVArq3oQL5cF7kzi529hiQm2s3ErRBakvWh4i2VMnRB_hJpxkIE5gGiJMItts6KcOqc3v54lHife1usF9HWepDgfFynhsUXtSC4V8M0rw_jlVl9f9vA_li4G5Z5fGn5YK8JKsLvwC8wrpAYGtIxbLWvvQoI7ONFMog3zN...

Re: HAM Radios

Icom, Yaesu, and Kenwood are safe bets. TYT, Baofeng, and the other cheap Chinese radios may work just fine, but many are prone to spurious emissions, or susceptible to intermod due to poor filtering and selectivity, QA issues and shitty software. For the price of a Baofeng handheld or even the litt...

Re: Moab Trip Pack List

Here's a old pick of me with my previous truck (a Ford I know) on the Mojave Road and instead of snow that's all salt on a dry lake bed, the California version of winter! Yeah, I did Mojave with a group from Expedition Portal on new years. We crossed the "dry lake" after several days of rain, it wa...

We're up to 19 trucks confirmed! Still waiting on contact info from a few, if you haven't submitted yours (either pm or form), please check out the first post for the form.

Re: HAM Radios

Honestly @RAM4ROKS, that depends on you, but I'd bet it takes you 30 minutes to complete. It's 35 multi choice questions that you've already memorized, you can probably do it in 5 but the paper work and class structure takes a little time. As for study, memorize some of the content and take some pra...

Re: HAM Radios

You're right @nts007, at least in the US, using the radio to transmit in any capacity does require a license. You can certainly get started on your install, and use the radio to receive only to get familiar with terminology and see if there's any repeater activity in your area. Many radios can be mo...

Re: HAM Radios

I put together a quick licensing guide for getting your tech since I had a few questions from the Moab group. It's basically a cut up version of HRS's intro here: http://www.hamradioschool.com/getting-started-in-ham-radio/ FCC Licensing: To become a ham radio operator you must obtain a license from ...

Re: HAM Radios

VHF/UHF frequencies are basically line of sight, you're limited in how far you can transmit by obstructions and the curvature of the earth. Repeaters are radios with antennas generally mounted high in the air to increase range. They listen on one frequency and retransmit what's heard on another over...

I don't want to clutter up this thread with responses, but I think this is the best place to gauge interest. Anyone interested in a multi-day group expedition after/before the main May 1-7 event? Thinking something like White Rim or Maze District, definitely open to other suggestions. If you're able...

In case anyone is curious about the difficulty or other trail details for the options proposed, most are RR4W trails and rated on their site: 4 - Trail consisting of loose rock, dirt, and sand with some slickrock surfaces. Some erosion; washes, gulches and rock steps no higher than 18”. Tall tires(3...

Re: MOAB 2017 - May 1-7

In your post you mention the Midland MXT105. It appears the MXT115 and MXT400 have some repeater functionality. I'm not good with advanced functions of civilian radios (anyone have a SINCGARS? Lol). Would that act as a mobile repeater for everyone's hand held devices? If someone ran a MXT115/400 wi...

Re: MOAB 2017 - May 1-7

I have that blue Rugged Radio. Yeah, that's a re-branded and pre-programmed Baofeng UV-5R. You can buy the baofeng programming cable for $7 on Amazon and use free software CHIRP to read and add to the configuration. But @Mule has a point, it's easy to misconfigure something and have it not work in ...
