Shouldn't the 8 speed help it get better MPG's?

So....dumb question. Since the Wagon is getting the 8 speed, shouldn't that help it get a little better MPG's??

I am thinking of buying one within the next year. I truly hope this is just a case of bad luck with this one. I know it's gotta suck having all those issues with a brand new truck.
